Groundwork Bridgeport Awarded Fairfield County Community Foundation Grant to Assist Elderly Homeowners
Groundwork to Continue Innovative “Our Folks” Program
May 2, 2006 – Groundwork Bridgeport, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to beautifying and enhancing Bridgeport’s environment, has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation, in support of Groundwork’s innovative Our Folks program. The Our Folks program provides reduced-cost landscape maintenance services to low-income, elderly homeowners so that they may remain in their homes, and independent, longer.
“Groundwork Bridgeport is delighted to partner with FCCF to continue the Our Folks program in Bridgeport,” said Executive Director Richard J. Tiani. “The reason for the program is simple; to keep our seniors in their own houses as they age. The elderly are our folks, and as such need to be taken care of,” continued Tiani. Tiani also noted that the program will integrate Groundwork’s existing job training program with the landscape maintenance work. “At Groundwork we always combine projects to achieve maximum results,” he said.
The program is a continuation from last year’s successful low-cost program that provided valuable services to elderly homeowners all year long. Groundwork’s clients have expressed great pleasure with the services they have received, and the reduced cost has been helpful to those living on limited budgets and fixed incomes. A returning client is Robert Keleman of Bridgeport, who said, “I can’t praise Groundwork enough, because they did a great job. They are really a blessing.” In 2005, Groundwork made 550 landscape maintenance visits to senior citizens in Bridgeport, Trumbull, Stratford, and Fairfield
To qualify for the program, individuals must be 62+ years of age, a resident of Bridgeport, Fairfield or Stratford, and live in a house they own. Low-income participants receive significant reductions in prices. Residents who believe they may be qualified for the program can call Groundwork Bridgeport for a free estimate at 203-335-6126.
