Job Training
As part of the Our Folks program, we recruit and sustain a part-time workforce. While assisting elderly, low-income residents with their yard work is the primary purpose of the program, a secondary focus is a landscape job training program. The necessity of a work force to provide the Our Folks service offers a secondary benefit to people in Bridgeport by creating a small number of new landscaping jobs each year.
Through the Our Folks program we train individuals who need new job skills and the opportunity to develop a strong work history. Our organization currently works with a number of partner agencies in Bridgeport, Norwalk, and Stamford to receive new employees through referrals. Many social service agencies in southwest Connecticut work hard to find job placements for clients that will provide training, support, and a positive environment. The partnerships between Groundwork Bridgeport and these agencies are positive for both sides. At Groundwork, we receive employees looking for a good job when there is an opening for landscaping, and other agencies are able to assist local residents in re-entering the work force.
We prepare the trainees for the workforce through on-the-job instruction and training. As part of the program, we also encourage the members of our workforce to actively seek higher paying employment. Most employees stay one to two years at Groundwork and then move on to full-time jobs. Groundwork Bridgeport has proudly received awards from Career Resources and the American Legion for our job training, placement, and employment of adults who are re-entering the job market.
